Joey R"Being new to BJJ, I found an awesome introduction to it in a very welcoming atmosphere at Heroes. Very well instructed through Gumby and Mike. Still a novice but have already noticed changes such as generally feeling better mentally and having more energy. Central Downtown SJ, it couldn’t be in a better spot.  "

DDN"This is the next generation of academies no longer are academies confined to hidden industrial parks, this academy is in an amazing prime downtown location that looks like it would be suited for an art gallery. Which does fit since the head instructor Alan (Gumby) Marques keeps a strong focus on the pure gentile art we know as Jiu-Jitsu. Gumby is an incredibly patient instructor whose mellow demeanor offers students excellent instruction. But don’t let Gumby’s mellow demeanor fool ya he will put it on ya, he is a fierce competitor who is well respected in the BJJ world.  In short Heroes is SIC!  "

Gregory B"This is my new training spot. Its new and fresh from the mats to the rafters. Gumby, Canada and the crew provide top notch technical instruction in the arts of Jiu Jitsu, Judo and wrestling. The atmosphere is one of learning and respect. From Gumby (head instructor/owner/cool guy) to Canada (Brown Belt & cool guy ) to the students. Everyone is helpful, knowledgeable and has a true passion for the art of grappling. I hope to further evolution in jiu jitsu and this is the best place for me. Free of egos and focused on learning.  "

Rich P."One day the young man inside me looked at the old man in the mirror and said “What the @#$! Happened to You?”.  I needed to get in shape, Gyms had never worked for me as I found that I missed the team aspect that I had enjoyed from the sports of my youth (Football, Wrestling, Baseball, Rugby and Kempo Karate).  The all grappling format of Heroes was of interest to myself and my wife as we both agreed I was too old to get punched in the face. I originally started at Heroes just so I could get my Old Fat Ass back in some kind of shape. So in June of 2009 this OLD FAT BASTARD went to his first class at Heroes.  After that first class my knees hurt, my lungs hurt my hands ached and I discovered ten or twelve muscles I didn’t even know I had.  But as I lay on my bed that night trying to recover I realized I was hooked. Now seven months later, 31 pounds lost and a couple of stripes under, or I should say around my belt I’m loving it even more.  The days I can’t make it to the Dojo due to my hectic work schedule I am truly disappointed. I have to thank all the instructors at Heroes, Alan “Gumby” Marques of coarse but also Chuck and Shozo, the Judo instructor, Scott, Dino and Ed from the wrestling program.  I could not have even started the long road to getting healthy and in shape without you guys, Thanks. If any of you are like I was, old, fat, out of shape and looking for a place to start the change this is the place.  "

Kyle G."I started at Heroes about two months ago and it is awesome.  Everyone there is very friendly; it’s like a big family over there.  The academy offers tons of resources for the MMA fan.  There are judo, jiu-jitsu (gi), no gi, wrestling, and competition classes.  The instructors are top notch and are always there.  I have trained at some places where the black belt instructor puts a blue or purple in charge, not here.  This place has Gumby (Alan) teaching every gi class there.  The flexibility of the place is awesome as well:  classes as early as 7AM and classes running until 9PM.  I love this place and will be here for a very long time.   "

Mike A"Gumby the Head Instructor is a great teacher. The facility is all new and clean. I didn’t have any grappling experience before I started here, but Gumby’s instrcutions are so simple and easy that you can follow everything he teaches. The only problem is remembering it when ur actually sparring haha. All the instructor’s Gumby, Canada, Keith and Mike are all very helpful and try to help in any way they can. If you want to learn BJJ then this place is the way to go. You really have to work hard if u want to be good. Unless your a natural, but all the instruction is top notch and on point. We start off with running, then pushups, situps, legups, head bops which hurt like hell(my neck has never been so sore the next day after training) and snake manuevers, then Gumby shows Basic Fundamentals that is our base of BJJ.(which I still need to work on) It’s not Easy Gumby’s Motto is Train Hard, Fight Hard, Party Hard. I guess it depends who you are though. Some people progress faster than others. Just Stay motivated and it will all come. Gumby keeps everybody motivated and says that mat time is the only way to get better. After fundamentals he shows us more advanced moves and we work on them with a partner. More Drill and more Drills. Then the funnest and most tiring part of class. Sparring! Sparring is the best part of class. People are very aware and cautious here. There are a lot of strong guys, but they don’t try to go all out and injure you. There are no crazy ego’s and everybody just want’s to learn and get better. It’s a great atmosphere! Heroes is in downtown San jose and has class times all throughout the day! They also teach Judo, Wrestling, Gi and No Gi BJJ Classes Train Hard, Fight Hard,Party Hard   By the Way Gumby got his Black Belt from Ralph Gracie and Trained with BJ PENN. Gumby Actually gave BJ Penn his Nickname. The PRODIGY   "

Chris M."I was looking for a place to train BJJ in San Jose for almost two months before i found Heroes.  Its not that i couldn’t find a legit academy, there’s a few really great schools in the area but they run a bit pricey.  After a few weeks training here I know I made the right decision. Here’s why Heroes is the the complete package in my humble opinion. Instructors: Gumby’s teachings are easy to follow and he happily answers any questions if you still can’t figure out a move. He preaches simple, effective techniques during the introductory classes and divides the larger classes up based on skill level so the more experienced players get what they need. Students: In two words…. hella chill. No crazy egos or tough guys Facility: top of the line mats, gorgeous aesthetics (vaulted ceilings, birck lined walls), brand new showers/bathrooms. If you’ve ever wanted to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I definitely recommend checking this academy out.   "
