George gets his Purple Belt!

They say probably the toughest leap within Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the transition between blue and purple belt.  George Tan is definitely tough, and he displays the best qualities and skills we aspire to at Heroes Martial Arts, so today George has graduated to the Purple Belt (Faxia Roxa in Portuguese if you prefer).

Congrats George!  We’re all looking forward to seeing what you accomplish on the mat next and look forward to your continued leadership!

Unfortunately, we are also saying goodbye to Giggles for now as he is heading to Naval Officer’s school in Rhode Island to begin a four year tour (and then parts unknown after that.  We’re sure that Giggle’s will represent Heroes well as he serves our country!

Fundamentals of BJJ New Rotation!

The Fundamental class are resetting this week (July 5th), which means we will go back to the first week of classes on the Fundamental schedule.

The Fundamentals program at Heroes is an 11 week, 22 class rotation of the basic techniques and concepts that you will need to master in order to develop a deep understanding of Jiu Jitsu.

The classes are designed so that any beginner can enter each class and  comfortably participate, but advanced students are also encouraged to attend because sharpening your fundamental skills will always improve your overall game.

THe Fundamentals class attempts to give a deep understanding of the very basics within Jiu Jitsu and begins by covering the cornerstone positions, and explains in depth the technique from both an execution level and a concept level.  An understanding of timing and philosophy will allow the student to develop overall strategies no matter what situation they find them selves in.

Whether you are thinking about taking your very first class at Heroes Martial Arts, or if you have been training with us since we opened, this will be a GREAT week to get on the mats.

The full list of fundamental classes is available here.

Heroes at Bushido Cup!

The Heroes swooped into the East Bay this past weekend for the Bushido Cup. Thrown by our good friend Crosley Gracie, it was a smaller event, but a good experience overall, especially for the Heroes who took home a lot of trophies!

We’ve got lots of photos and videos of the Heroes in action, we’re gathering as much as we can here (you can also check the Heroes Facebook page)

  • ~ Kyle G.

Kyle G."I started at Heroes about two months ago and it is awesome.  Everyone there is very friendly; it’s like a big family over there.  The academy offers tons of resources for the MMA fan.  There are judo, jiu-jitsu (gi), no gi, wrestling, and competition classes.  The instructors are top notch and are always there.  I have trained at some places where the black belt instructor puts a blue or purple in charge, not here.  This place has Gumby (Alan) teaching every gi class there.  The flexibility of the place is awesome as well:  classes as early as 7AM and classes running until 9PM.  I love this place and will be here for a very long time.   "
