Wilbert Thigpen to Faxia Azul!

(That means that Wilbert Thigpen gets his blue belt!)

“Big Will” is known around Heroes as much for his big personality as anything else.  He used to be much bigger in fact, he’s lost over 50 pounds since starting Jiu Jitsu!

Will is actually one of Gumby’s original Warehouse students, the oft talked about “Secret Warehouse” where Gumby taught prior to Heroes.

Will is as skilled as he is boisterous, and in addition to being able to train HARD, he’s always quick to offer encouragement to his teammates.

Will earned a Gold Medal in his division at the US Open this weekend, showing complete domination in each of his matches with shut out victories!

Congrats Will!  We’re really lucky to have you here at Heroes Martial Arts!

Dennis Ruth promoted to Blue Belt

Dennis Ruth gets his blue belt!

Dennis was one of the first students at Heroes Martial Arts, but Gumby and Dennis had encountered each other years earlier at Dennis’s Judo home in Santa Clara.

Judo and Jiu Jitsu compliment each other very well in many ways of course, and to know both is to be well rounded, but for long time students of one or the other the transition can sometimes be tough.  Dennis has a ton of experience in judo, but now he can say when he gets on the mat he can think like a Jiu Jitsu person as well.

Dennis jumped right away into his first Jiu Jitsu competition at Blue Belt, taking Silver in his division at the US Open!

Congrats Denny!

Fundamentals Reset!

This week we begin the Fundamentals Rotation anew, having come to the end of our 11 week cycle last week.  Don’t think of Fundamentals as being “beginner” techniques!  While the Fundamentals classes are designed to be very novice friendly, students of all levels of Jiu Jitsu can always sharpen their basic skill set as well.  In truth, advancing your skill set is often a matter of practicing your basics against more and more advanced competitors!

This week will be the fundamentals of posture and basic closed guard work.  These are skills everyone can continue to develop!

These are also excellent classes for a brand new student to start with!  Remember, we are still having our win an iPad contest from now until October.  Student who gets the most sign ups will win a free iPad!

Random Testimonial

  • ~ Phi P.

Phi P."I came to Heroes after being invited by my friend to come out and roll.  As I walked in to the academy, I was pleasantly surprised to find out big and spacious the mat was.  The pictures don't really do it justice how much mat space there is.  I was greeted by owner/ head instructor Gumby and openly welcomed into the gym. The facility is top notch: Swain mats over 2400sqft, restrooms and private changing rooms, water fountain.   I came as the team was getting their last training in before a tournament so Gumby worked mainly on fixing small mechanics.  His teaching method is very methodical and detail oriented.  I felt was very specific in his concept that he wanted to teach. I only expected to come for an open mat and I ended up staying for 2 and half hours. There are lots of choices in the Silicon Valley for Jiu-jitsu, but I highly recommend Heroes for anybody at any skill level.  Not only for the great instruction and facility, but for the friendly environment as well. I will definitely come back to train here"
