David Notaro recieves his Faxia Azul

Two things you need to know about David Notaro:  1)  He was one of the first students at Heroes Martial Arts.  2)  Despite his physique and strength, he actually weighs less than 170 pounds!  (which surprises everyone who’s ever rolled with him!).

David is an absolute beast on the mat, and in recognition of his hard work has been awarded the blue belt.

Davis is a recent San Jose State grade who is currently splitting time between here and his hometown of Los Angeles looking to start his career!  If anyone is looking to hire a someone who managed to qualify for a Heroes blue belt, Dave is your man!

Eric Eugenio promoted to Blue Belt!

Eric Eugenio upgrades to version Faxia Azul!  Eric has been around Heroes since almost the very beginning, and he’s been featured on the site before as the winner of our first (and only) weight loss challenge.

Eric has continued to look svelte in his gi and has definitely been turning it up a notch in his training lately, so for his efforts and abilities has been awarded the blue belt!

Congratulations to Eric and keep up the great work!

Sonny Le gets his Blue Belt!

Sonny gets his well earned blue belt!  Sonny has been around the Bay and came into Heroes pretty tough on the mat.  He’s only shown steady improvement from there ever since then.  Not necessarily the most vocal person in the class, but Sonny will let his skills do his talking for him.

Congrats Sonny!

Mike Strangis gets his brown belt!

Mike Strangis (Hobbit as he’s sometimes known to his CLOSE friends) has demonstrated explosive ability for a long time and certainly is the embodiment of the saying of it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.

Mike has proven to be a devastating competitor as well as an excellent instructor.  Mike has been heading up the youth program at Heroes from the beginning.

Mike has been highly involved in Jiu Jitsu for a number of years, and in addition to working with Gumby has also received guidance and instruction from Sandro “Batata” Santiago.  Thus Gumby and Batata have jointly promoted Mike to rank of brown belt (faxia marrom)!

Congratulations Mike!  We’re proud to have you here at Heroes!

He has accomplished so much in Jiu-Jitsu around the world and has already been invited twice to compete at the biennial Abu Dhabi World Championships (ADCC). Glover became one of the youngest Americans to reach the level of black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has an even brighter future ahead of him in the sport.

An Academy of Heroes Gallery

Sean Whitmore‘s school project had him bring his camera into class and he captured some spectacular portraits.  Check out Sean’s gallery over at Smugmug!

Students are free to use their own portraits for their own personal use.  Consider using Smugmug to make prints, proceeds go to Sean for his hard work and help support his photography!

Sean Whitmore gets his Purple Belt!

Sean Michael Whitmore is a man of many talents.

He’s very good at photography (man of the good pictures on the website were taken by him).  He likes writing poetry.  He has a very artistic side to him.

He’s also capable of rendering you unconscious in no time flat if he manages to sink in his turbo charged cross collar choke.

Sean puts the Artist in the Martial Artist If you’ve ever rolled with him, or seen him in action, you’ll know what we mean.

In recognition of his artistry Sean has been promoted to purple belt (Faxia Roxa) in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

(Interesting tidbit, Sean actually received his blue belt in the same promotion ceremony when Gumby received his black belt!)

We’re very fortunate to have an artist like Sean here at Heroes Martial Arts.

Video of Sean getting promoted!  And check out the size of the class that night!

  • ~ Kyle G.

Kyle G."I started at Heroes about two months ago and it is awesome.  Everyone there is very friendly; it’s like a big family over there.  The academy offers tons of resources for the MMA fan.  There are judo, jiu-jitsu (gi), no gi, wrestling, and competition classes.  The instructors are top notch and are always there.  I have trained at some places where the black belt instructor puts a blue or purple in charge, not here.  This place has Gumby (Alan) teaching every gi class there.  The flexibility of the place is awesome as well:  classes as early as 7AM and classes running until 9PM.  I love this place and will be here for a very long time.   "
