Kaijin Dodgeball Tournament April 18

We’ll be sending a team of Heroes to this one.  Note that Gumby wants to win this one pretty badly, he’s already started trash talking other instructors in the area!

We are proud to announce the 1st annual Kaijin Dodgeball Invitational. The tournament will take place on Sunday, April 18th starting at 12:30pm with a rules meeting, with games to start at 1.

The event will be a double elimination tournament with subsequent challenge matches. We will be playing 5 on 5 so start looking for your team of 5 to sign up as soon as possible (we may have to limit the number of teams if it gets too big). The cost for the event will be a minimum donation of $20 for each team with all proceeds going to the Santa Cruz SPCA (who hopefully will bring a few dogs for a small mobile pet adoption). Kaijin members can form as many teams as it takes to include everyone, however, other invited schools and institutions may enter only one team of 5 (with 2-3 alternates). Team costumes encouraged.

Please contact Igor, Garth or Paul to register.

The winning team will get a sweet trophy and unlimited prestige.

Let the games begin…

Tournament Prep

Often times before a competition, Gumby would deny himself something he liked in order to get in better shape, but more importantly to maintain focus throughout his training.  Tournaments are won long before you ever step on the mat, the better prepared combatant is usually the one who can demonstrate that they wanted it for longer.

April and May promise to big months on the competition scene, and many of the Heroes are already preparing, dieting in order to both prepare them selves mentally and physically for the tournament and to make weight.

Furthermore, it also easier to show will power as a group than to resist temptations alone.  That is why we’re all setting individual goal and working together as a group to meet and exceed our expectations.

Now, not everyone is planning on competing (at Heroes you can expect the same support whether you decide to enter tournaments or not), but everyone has come into the Academy with a goal to better themselves, get better at Jiu Jitsu, improve their health, or many other reasons.  But everyone is encouraged to participate.  Not only for your own benefits, but also the feeling of contributing to the cause and helping our fellow Heroes in the upcoming competitions.

Gumby has personally sworn off all beverages except for water and green tea until after the America’s Cup BJJ tournament. Giving up beer isn’t that difficult right now, but Gumby’s been drinking four or five Bubble Teas per week lately!

Some of the things the Heroes are giving up include soft drinks, caffeine, alcohol, sweets and red meat.

We’re weighing in all this week and making our pledges.  We will weigh in again on April 21st (last day for pre-registration prices for the America’s Cup) to track progress and determine what categories competitors will be entering.  Finally we’ll get to see the results of our hard work May 1-2 at the America’s Cup in Los Gatos and (hopefully) we’ll get to celebrate together!

We’ll post participating students, their goals, and what they’re doing to get focused soon!
