June Promotions

Belt Promotions for June

Although we may or may not be done yet, here are the belt promotions (stripes) that have been awarded in the month of June so far.

White Belt 1st Stripe

Vladamir Fuentes
Stefan Mendoza
Ricky Lai
Justin Nguyen

White Belt 2nd Stripe

Mike “Colossus” O’Connor
Adrian Fuentes
Donald Littleton
Tri Tran
Chris Nguyen
Vincent Rallo

White Belt 3rd Stripe

Alex Lin

Congrats Heroes!

We have a stripe system for our white belts only.  Four stripes and then the student is eligible for their blue belt.  Philosophically, everY promotion from the white belt stripe through the colored belts (blue, purple, brown then black) will be roughly twice as difficult to accomplish as the previous ranking.  For a description of our ranking system and fundamentals, click here: Heroes BJJ Fundamentals Checklist (PDF Format)

Mike went on to take first place in the tournament, submitting all five of his opponents in the round robin format!

From all reports, it was a great tournament and a lot of fun.  From the website description:

Monterey Jiujitsu holds their first gi optional, submission only jiujitsu tournament at Body Worx in Monterey California. Hosted by Bjj Black belt Daniel Thomas of Claudio Franca. This was a great Tournament with tons of submissions and a large turn out. Round Robin format, each contender had at least 5 fights.

Here is their introductory clip.  On it you can see Mike catch his opponent in an oma plata

Offense sells tickets; Defense wins championships

All this week at Heroes we are going to be concentrating on a sometimes overlooked but obviously important aspect of grappling: Defense.  Special attention will be placed on escapes and safety positions.

  • ~ Phi P.

Phi P."I came to Heroes after being invited by my friend to come out and roll.  As I walked in to the academy, I was pleasantly surprised to find out big and spacious the mat was.  The pictures don't really do it justice how much mat space there is.  I was greeted by owner/ head instructor Gumby and openly welcomed into the gym. The facility is top notch: Swain mats over 2400sqft, restrooms and private changing rooms, water fountain.   I came as the team was getting their last training in before a tournament so Gumby worked mainly on fixing small mechanics.  His teaching method is very methodical and detail oriented.  I felt was very specific in his concept that he wanted to teach. I only expected to come for an open mat and I ended up staying for 2 and half hours. There are lots of choices in the Silicon Valley for Jiu-jitsu, but I highly recommend Heroes for anybody at any skill level.  Not only for the great instruction and facility, but for the friendly environment as well. I will definitely come back to train here"
