What every BJJ Student should know!

(or what every BJJ Student at Heroes will be working on).

At Heroes Martial Arts, we believe that the improving on your fundamentals is the surest way to solidify your Jiu Jitsu.  To help aid our students progress, we’ve created this handy checklist of the first 19 fundamental classes, as well as a guideline of what a student should hope to accomplish in order to progress through the first four stripes of white belt.  Students can use this a a checklist to see where they are at and what they still need to work on!

Coming in April the Fundaments class will be more structured so you will know which class is being taught on what day.

At Heroes Martial Arts, we believe that grappling is for everyone!  Our programs in Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling are geared to a wide range of physical types and skill levels, from experienced veterans to rank beginners.

The grappling arts has many practical benefits, including self defense, exercise and fun.  The particular benefits of training Jiu Jitsu, which is specifically designed to allow a smaller, weaker person to overcome an opponent using technique and leverage.

We have had a number of inquiries from women who are interested in participating at Heroes Martial Arts, but are a little reluctant because of the close contact nature of the grappling arts.  We are frequently asked if “there are any other girls who are grappling at our school yet?” (The answer is “Yes” by the way).

Furthermore, it been our experience that everyone tends to benefit from training with their peers and the top women combat athletes in the world have often been pushed by training on a regular basis with other women.

In order to attract more women to our grappling programs, we are offering the following specials:

First of all, for the remainder of March only, we are offering a special “Ladies Only” rate of $80 per month for unlimited training, and we are waiving the usual sign up fee!  This is one of the best work out deals in the South Bay, and for BJJ this is one of the best deals in the industry.

Secondly, we are offering a “Women’s Only Class” once per week at Friday from 6:00 – 7:00 where women will have the opportunity to train and compete  only with other women!  This is a BJJ based gi class and will provide an environment

The Unlimited Rate includes the Women’s only class, but also allows you to train at any of the other (co-ed) classes offered at Heroes Martial Arts (which we sincerely hope you chose to participate in!)

Please note that while we cater to all abilities and levels, Heroes Martial Arts holds everyone to the same standards!  We seek to bring out the best in everyone!

First class is always free and visitors are always welcome.  Please come check us out!

In this photo (L-R) we see RZA the founder and leader of the legendary rap group the Wu-Tang Clan, Emory Tate an American International Master of Chess, Gumby the head BJJ Instructor at Heroes Martial Arts, Adisa Banjoko the founder of the HHCF (and long time student of Gumby’s at Heroes Martial Arts and Monk of the Black Knights.

Among the highlights of the day was a Jiu Jitsu demonstration given by Gumby and Adisa.  The event held at O Connell High School in San Francisco featured panel discussions,  music, graffiti and sidewalk art, martial arts and of course chess and showing youth strategies and outlets they could use in life.

At Heroes Martial Arts we’re always happy to be involved with and help the community and we’re looking to more opportunities in the future!

Dino D"Whether you are looking for a great new place to start training, a place to sharpen your skill/prepare for competition, or just a fun way to get in great shape and meet great people HEROES is the place to go.  I have been training at Heroes for a year and a half now and couldn't be happier with the Academy. I came here to try out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the first time and I certainly came to the right place. I've trained both in Judo and Wrestling for most of my life  I have been to MANY different gyms and trained under MANY different coaches let me tell you that heroes is truly a 5 star and 3 dimensional academy. Gumby is an excellent Jiu Jitsu coach and is very knowledgable, patient and personable.  It seems to be the norm at Heroes for more and more new people to start their training and within a few short months are comfortably training right along with guys that have been training for years! Very impressive. Although I have wrestled for many years I must say that Ed is the best wrestling coach I have ever trained under.  He is absolutely passionate about the sport and explains even the most basic techniques in great detail and usually has an entertaining story to go along with it!  At each practice I learn something new that I have been missing in my arsenal for YEARS. Shozo and the San Jose State crew that help out with Judo are amazing to work with.  If you know anything about Judo you know that Judoka from all over the country and all over the world come to San Jose State to train for National, International and World Competition.  To have a top notch instructor like Shozo who used to train/compete and coach at such a high level of competition here with us at Heroes is truly a blessing. As I could continue to go on and on let me also say that the people that the academy attracts are real class acts.  It feels like home coming here to train with many friendly faces that will smile and shake your hand, kick your butt, then smile and joke around again after class.  I have made many new friends at heroes who I always look forward to seeing both on and off the mat. Thank you Gumby and Heroes.  I would HIGHLY recommend ANYONE who is thinking about checking out the academy to call or stop by.  You will not be disappointed!  "
